"Igor Stravinsky’s Pagan sacrifice-themed orchestral bombshell

The Rite of Spring is still satisfying the gods 100 years after its debut. Now in fall, too: the decidedly youthful and unstuffy RiteNow Project, spearheaded by conductor Paolo Bortolameolli, celebrates the masterpiece’s centennial with a “one-time-only” performance at Woolsey Hall. The program, performed by Bortolameolli’s Zephyrus Project Orchestra, includes Stravinsky’s original masterpiece along with one Rite-inspired work from each of eight young but accomplished composers."

A Centennial Celebration of the "Rite of Spring"
Featuring Eight New Works Inspired by it for Massive Orchestra

    Picture
Igor Stravinsky and Nicholas Roerich's sketches for the premiere 1913 production

In the wake of its riotous premiere,
Igor Stravinsky's monumental Rite of Spring, became a beacon of inspiration for countless composers, performers, choreographers, dancers and visual artists. "The Rite" stunned listeners with its passion, focus, ingenuity and vehemence. "The Rite's" influence continues, and we are delighted to present RiteNow: a celebration of the centenary of "The Rite's" infamous premiere.
RiteNow promises to be an exhilarating production, in which Stravinsky’s masterpiece will be coupled with the premiere of eight orchestral responses to "the Rite,"written by some of the most promising young composers -- Benjamin Wallace, Daniel Schlosberg, Fay Kueen Wang, Gleb Kanasevich, Justin Tierney, Matthew Welch, Paul Kerekes, and Polina Nazaykinskaya.

The Rite of Spring is famous for the way that it's put together – these blocks of music, or "tableau,"  that bump up right next to one another. We will celebrate the 100th birthday of Stravinsky’s piece by writing eight short selections inspired by it. These will then be assembled just like the "tableau" in the "Rite" into one memorable piece for an orchestra of massive proportions.

"The Rite" and these eight responses will be performed by the Zephyrus Project Orchestra, a group of talented young musicians, led by conductor and RiteNow producer Paolo Bortolameolli.

The orchestral performance will also be enhanced by the an immersive environmental design by Solomon Weisbard.

The eleven of us -- Eight composers, one conductor, one production designer, one costume designer -- have teamed up to honor this groundbreaking work.
    Picture
The celebration will take place in New Haven's historic and stunning Woolsey Hall (500 College Street) this November 2013. Admission is FREE and open to all!

This is going to be big, and something you'll be proud to be a part of. With such a talented crew, only greatness can ensue. Thank you!
